Councillor Baker encouraged everyone to vote in the federal election. The Councillor has been disheartened by negativity on social media regarding the election and public service.
Councillor Brennan noted that, in spite of instability witnessed at the federal level, it is wonderful to think back on elections at the municipal level as they have been respectful and civil with ongoing respect between council colleagues.
Councillor Pelkman noted that, with vaccine passports on the way, some frontline workers will unfortunately bear the brunt of anger. The Councillor encouraged people to thank front line staff. Councillor Pelkman also congratulated the local team from Elections Canada running polls at the Strathroy Portuguese Club as the voting experience felt spacious and safe.
Councillor Cowan has been reflecting after watching a 9/11 documentary, and is struck by the love and respect people showed to one another in that crisis; perhaps that has been lost over the years. Councillor Cowan noted that, in reference to social media, healthy debate is good and personal attacks are not.
Councillor Hipple is feeling positive after the third week of school; the Councillor is pleased to see happy students and staff. Councillor Hipple asked motorists to respect crossing guards and slow down.
Deputy Mayor Richards thanked businesses and residents who supported the Parkinson's Walk. The Deputy Mayor noted that roof shingles should not be disposed of in BRA recycling bins. A reminder regarding accepted items can be included in the next tax notice, in addition to a link on the municipal website.
Mayor Vanderheyden noted that residents can still take the opportunity to receive a vaccination to be safe, and to keep families and friends safe. CN Rail Safety Week is kicking off.
